Space is the Place 1974 directed by John Coney After traveling through space in a ship propelled by music, Sun Ra discovers a planet he believes could be a new home for the black race. Returning to earth, he lands in Oakland, California circa 1972. There, he has to fight “The Overseer,” played by Ray Johnson, a super-villain who pimps out the black race. Before the subsequent destruction of Earth, Sun Ra offers those who would follow him an “alter-destiny.” However the Overseer, the FBI, and NASA are all after Sun Ra’s Black Space Program; ultimately forcing him to return to space. Sun Ra, wrapped in the mythology of ancient Egypt and glittering with the sheen of space-age technology, seems too far out. He claims to come from Saturn, and he is at least three planets distant from Earth: as an African American (Mars), a jazz musician (Jupiter) and an avant-gardist (there’s Saturn). Sun Ra felt the future for black Americans could be truly intergalactic. “Space is the Place” is an Afrofuturist science fiction film made in 1972. A beacon of African American expression shining of hypnotic avant-jazz scores and lavish cosmic imagery.
