Empowering Decentraland Creators with Open-Source Community Modules

By Decentraland DAO, , in Community Highlights

TheCryptoTrader is a dedicated DAO grantee well known for their continuous work creating open-source gaming kits that are used by countless Decentraland creators. Known as ‘Community Modules’, the gaming kits provide a core foundation of various mechanics, tools, and assets that, because they are open source, other creators can then build on top of and modify. TheCryptoTrader, also known as Alex, has been an influential force in Decentraland’s community as their work has supported the creation of many of Decentraland’s experiences and has made building and developing for the platform more accessible to creators of all skill levels.

Starting with smaller-scale projects that were awarded grants of, at most, $3,000, such as Solitaire, Gallery, or the adventurous Parkour Kit, TheCryptoTrader has most recently received $34,200 in funding for their latest and most ambitious project, Tower Defence. The significant size of the grant is a testament to their unwavering commitment to Decentraland. These developments also underscore how powerful open collaboration between developers and communities can be as we continue to build the metaverse together.

All the projects developed by TheCryptoTrader have been made accessible through the Awesome Repository (a collection of open-source modules for Decentraland hosted on GitHub), thus allowing creators to freely access, use, and modify their code. The accessible nature of these projects has also helped inspire and empower other creators to contribute to the community's growth. Open-source work is essential to the development of the metaverse. Not only does it enable the community to work towards a common goal through collaboration, it also helps build up their foundational knowledge. Open-source assets lead to faster development times, more secure and stable software, and a greater sense of community ownership.

Community Modules: Unlocking New Possibilities for Creators

TheCryptoTrader developed Community Modules to make it easier to build interactive experiences in Decentraland, helping fellow creators bring their visions to life. Community Modules are a library of pre-built components and scripts that can easily be imported into a Decentraland project. They are designed to streamline development, reduce redundancy, and inspire creator collaboration. Some key features of Community Modules include:

  • Reusable Components: The modules contain many pre-built components that can be easily integrated into any project. These include animations, interactions, and user interfaces, which can save creators time and effort during development.

  • Open-Source Collaboration: The Community Modules are open-source, meaning anyone can contribute to their development or adapt them for their projects. This creates a collaborative environment where creators can work together to improve and expand upon the available resources.

  • Accessibility: TheCryptoTrader has prioritized ensuring that the Community Modules are accessible to creators of all skill levels. With detailed documentation and support available, even those new to Decentraland development can use the modules to enhance their projects.

  • Continuous Improvement: The Community Modules are constantly updated and expanded based on user feedback and community input. This ensures that the tools remain relevant and useful to creators as Decentraland grows and evolves.

The Versatility of Community Modules: Potential Uses in Decentraland

TheCryptoTrader’s Community Modules have been widely adopted in various Decentraland projects since their inception. Currently, the DAO has granted funds to seven modules:

  1. Solitaire

  2. Checkers

  3. Community Card Game Module Expansion

  4. Gallery

  5. Parkour Creation Kit

  6. Parkour Creation Kit Expansion

  7. Tower Defence Creation Kit

So far, creators have found each module immensely useful in accelerating development and incorporating interactive features into their experiences. This proves the value behind TheCryptoTrader’s unwavering efforts to democratize content creation. With the power of community modules and collaboration, the potential for creating interactive experiences in Decentraland is limitless.

There’s an incredibly wide array of uses creators could give to Community Modules; for instance, creators can employ the modules to create immersive educational experiences that allow users to interact with exhibits, answer quizzes, and explore complex concepts hands-on, creating new opportunities for learning and exploration in Decentraland. Coders could also leverage the modules to construct art galleries that include interactive elements such as clickable information panels and virtual guided tours, thus allowing users to explore and engage with artwork in new and exciting ways.Additionally, the Community Modules have been instrumental in the development of multiplayer games. Creators can use the modules to develop games that enable players to compete against one another or work together to achieve a common goal, encouraging social interaction and engagement within the Decentraland community.

As Decentraland continues to evolve, initiatives like the Community Modules will drive innovation and ensure the platform remains a thriving, dynamic space for creators and users alike. By working together and pooling our resources, we can all contribute to the continued success of Decentraland and its diverse community.

Get Involved: Contribute to the Community Modules

The Community Modules initiative is open-source and relies heavily on feedback and contributions from the Decentraland community. If you’re interested, there are several ways you can get involved and contribute. The easiest thing you can do is to use the modules in your own projects and provide feedback on their functionality and usability. This helps the Community Modules team identify improvement areas and refine their offerings.

Another way to contribute is by submitting pull requests on GitHub to develop new modules or improve existing ones, allowing the community to have a say in developing the Community Modules and helping ensure they remain relevant and valuable. Finally, if you are well-versed with the Community Modules, your support and guidance is invaluable to new creators looking to use the modules in their projects. Don’t hesitate to share your knowledge and experience and help foster a collaborative and supportive environment that will ultimately make Decentraland a better place for creators and explorers alike!
