Powered by Polygon, Decentraland’s Game Jam has returned for 2023! This year’s edition revolves around the theme ‘Lucid Dreams’ and while it must be built using SDK 7, it does not have to be a game. The judges of #DCLGameJam23 will be expecting an interactive experience that will transport them to the amazing and perhaps bizarre world of your dreams. Dive into the full details below before you get to work.

The Challenge

Create an interactive Decentraland scene based on the theme ‘Lucid Dreams’ using SDK 7 and at least one AI tool. All scenes should be suited for publishing to a Decentraland World (max size 100 MB).

Teams of up to 6 or individual participants will have 21 days to build their scenes and must submit their creations via the official entrance form before 11:59pm UTC on July 10, 2023.

Submission Instructions

Go to the official Game Jam ‘23 entrance form. You will be asked to enter information such as your email and wallet address in the event that you win.

To submit your Decentraland scene you will need to either include a link to a public GitHub repository, Dropbox, or Google Drive to hold your scene’s postscript. Whichever you choose, make sure your repository or folder is set to public!

Rules & Conditions

  1. The scene must be written using version 7 of the Decentraland SDK. It can be built using the Decentraland Editor, but not with the web scene Builder (as that creates scenes with the older version 6 of the SDK).

  2. You must use at least one AI tool in the creation of your scene. When entering you will be asked which tools you used and how.

  3. The scene can be any number of parcels large as long as the entirety of the publishable content does not exceed 100 MB (not counting the /node-modules folder).

  4. Scenes MUST include something interactive. Interactivity can be achieved by having the player perform actions like clicking, walking into triggers, etc. and have some kind of meaningful effect on the scene content. We also encourage that scenes connect to external servers and/or use blockchain technology as in one way or another.

  5. Scenes must revolve around the theme ‘Lucid Dreams’

  6. To keep a level playing field, the scenes submitted for the Game Jam should have mainly been developed during the competition period. When submitting your scene, you should clarify if you reused any prior work as part of the scene.

  7. If the instructions for players aren’t self-evident when entering the experience, you should provide instructions, either in-world or in the submission form. Judges will attempt to experience your scene as a user, they won’t read your code or the Github’s README file.

  8. Submissions will only be accepted if they are sent in via the official contest application form before the deadline of July 10, 2023 at 11:59pm UTC.

  9. You don’t need to own land or a Decentraland NAME to participate. Winning scenes will be published to Decentraland Worlds.

  10. You can participate alone or in teams of up to 6. We encourage the formation of multidisciplinary teams, for example including 3D artists, creative writers, and developers.

  11. Creators will retain all the rights to their assets and code after submitting, however all of the submitted scenes will be made open source for the developer community. You can use any open-source license you prefer to mark your code and assets.

  12. By entering the Game Jam, you are giving the Decentraland Foundation permission to use images & videos of and links to your entry for promotional purposes.

  13. If the scene relies on a custom server to handle multiplayer messaging or other processes, you don’t need to submit the code used on the server, just on the Decentraland scene. The scene should be playable by just running the scene, not requiring the judges to launch their own server.

FAQs

  • Can I work in a team?
    • Yes, group submissions of up to 6 people are allowed

  • Can I get an extension to the submit date?
    • No, the Game Jam period is firm.

  • At what time does the final deadline bell ring?
    • July 10th, 11:59pm UTC. No further submissions will be considered after that time.

  • Can I build my scene using the Builder?
    • No, this contest is only for scenes built using SDK 7, and the Builder uses an outdated version. For a no-code experience you can use the Decentraland Editor, which allows you to position items in space. You will then need to use code to make the scene interactive.

  • Can I build my scene for Genesis City instead of a World?
    • All entries to Game Jam 23 should be publishable to a World. Scenes in Worlds have less restrictions, so adapting your scene to be deployable to a World doesn’t take much work, if any. The main thing to keep in mind is the file limit of 100 MB. See the Worlds documentation.
