At the start of the year, Decentraland announced a bold mission in its 2024 Manifesto—to rebuild the virtual world’s client from the ground up. Pivoting away from a web-based experience, a new desktop client would allow for smooth, immersive exploration, and set the stage for an exciting future full of possibilities. Now, after a year of hard work, a historical IRL community sneak peek, and a brand new white paper, the big day is here: Decentraland 2.0 is LIVE!!

Available on Mac and Windows, the beta release of Decentraland’s new desktop client marks the start of a new era. Building on all the technical insights gathered since its 2020 launch, Decentraland 2.0 lays down a solid foundation that will allow the platform to develop without limits—with the potential to expand to VR, mobile, and beyond. The future has never been brighter for Decentraland, and the road ahead is packed with ambitious plans and new opportunities.

However, what truly makes Decentraland 2.0 special is that it represents the culmination of the community's influence over the years. When Decentraland first launched, it was a blank canvas, a decentralized virtual world platform ready to be inhabited. Now, it is a vibrant global society of explorers and creators, driven by their passion for connection, creativity, and collaboration. Shaped by its community, Decentraland 2.0 brings the original vision of a decentralized world to life. We can’t wait to see where it goes next!

Run, play, and dance the night away with no lagging! Faster load times and increased frame rates ensure a smooth in-world experience—even in crowded scenes. Play with friends and enjoy refined multiplayer gameplay with more accurate player positioning and group interactions. The upgrades aren’t limited to just your experience in-world though! Decentraland’s new desktop launcher ensures the client is always up to date and loads with minimal wait times.

DCL 2.0’s revamped graphics completely change how Decentraland looks—and how you see it! When exploring the virtual world, you can now see far into the distance, with the horizon loading scenes even 80 parcels away for a truly immersive exploration experience.

Many new features have been added to the virtual world’s ecosystem: Genesis City now features binary suns and moons (just like Decentraland’s logo!), undeveloped parcels have been planted with beautiful procedurally-generated landscapes, complete with fluttering leaves, flowing streams, chirping birds, and dappled sunlight. And guess what? Genesis City is an island!! Just walk to any of the city’s borders if you’re in need of a beach day. You just might find that sunsets really are better with two suns!

Definitely one of DCL 2.0’s most exciting additions, Badges track and celebrate your achievements in Decentraland, providing you with a new way to show off who you are on your profile. The categories cover a variety of creator, explorer, socializer, and builder accomplishments and vary in type with both unique and tiered Badges. Another new feature packed with fun is Daily Quests. Every day you jump in world, you’ll be given a list of challenges to complete, often related to the plethora of new mini-games that you can now find all over Decentraland! Complete all the challenges and unlock a Wearable or Emote reward. Every. Single. Day. Jump in world, click the little rocket on the top left, and complete the challenges to see what today’s reward will be!

Of course, one of the most important parts of Decentraland is YOU. In DCL 2.0, your avatar looks better and moves more naturally. Go stand next to a tree—your avatar will automatically touch it! Move your camera  around—that’s right, your avatar’s head will be looking with you! Even standing on a ledge, your avatar’s feet will adjust naturally. The exciting thing is, this is only the beginning! Many more improvements are planned that will bring you even closer to your avatar. 

In addition to physical interaction improvements, the way you connect socially has been enhanced too—with more new features to come! Now, when you chat in world, a chat bubble will appear over your avatar’s head (and you can use emojis too!). This breaks your conversations free from the chat box, bringing them into Decentraland’s environment with you, making socializing feel more interactive and engaging.

While the Creator Hub is not a feature of the client, it is part of the Decentraland 2.0 wave! Streamlining the creative process, the Creator Hub is now the go-to place for creating scenes. A program you download on your computer, just like the client, the Creator Hub offers both easy drag-and-drop creation as well as more advanced coding options all in one place together with all of Decentraland’s creative resources and asset packs.
